Imperfect Competition, Compensating Differentials, and Rent Sharing in the US Labor Market

چکیده
We quantify the importance of imperfect competition in US labor market by estimating size rents earned American firms and workers. construct a matched employer-employee panel dataset combining universe business worker tax records for period 2001–2015. Using this data, we identify estimate an equilibrium model with two-sided heterogeneity where workers view as substitutes because heterogeneous preferences over nonwage job characteristics. The allows us to draw inference about competition, sorting, compensating differentials, rent sharing. (JEL D24, H24, H25, J22, J24, J31, J42)

Compensating differentials in experimental labor markets
The theory of compensating differentials has proven difficult to test with observational data: the consequences of selection, unobserved firm and worker characteristics, and the broader macroeconomic environment complicate most analyses. Instead, we construct experimental, real-effort labor markets and offer an evaluation of the theory in a controlled setting. We study both the wage differentia...
متن کاملCompensating Differentials and Unmeasured Ability in the Labor Market for Nurses: Why Do Hospitals Pay More?
Nurses employed in hospitals realize a large wage advantage relative to nurses employed elsewhere. This paper examines alternative sources of the hospital premium, a topic of some interest given the current shifting of medical care out of hospitals. Whereas cross-sectional estimates indicate a hospital RN wage advantage of roughly 20 percent, longitudinal analysis suggests that a third to a hal...
متن کاملHealth insurance and imperfect competition in the health care market.
We show that when health care providers have market power and engage in Cournot competition, a competitive upstream health insurance market results in over-insurance and over-priced health care. Even though consumers and firms anticipate the price interactions between these two markets - the price set in one market affects the demand expressed in the other - Pareto improvements are possible. Th...
متن کاملDynamic Monopsonistic Competition and Labor Market Equilibrium
With the recent special issue of the Journal of Labor Economics on the topic, the concept of monopsony in the labor market seems to have achieved a new respectability as a formulation of wage setting institutions in labor markets. (See Ashenfelter, Farber, Ransom (2010) for a summary.) However, in the "new monopsony" literature, the market environment is not one in which a single buyer faces a ...
متن کاملImmigrants, Minorities, and Labor Market Competition
This paper investigates the extent of labor market competition among immigrants, minorities, and the native population. An analysis of 1980 U.S. Census data reveals that immigrants tend to be substitutes for some labor market groups and complements for others. The effects of shifts in immigrant supply on the earnings of native-born men are, however, very small. On the other hand, increases in t...
